Every dog is different and has individual dietry requirements.
Below is the selection of ingredients I use to create these custom made treats for your dog.
Flours
Grain Free Flours:
Grain-free flours are an excellent choice for dogs that suffer with gluten and immune sensitivities.
- Almond Flour - this is high in plant-based proteins, low in carbohydrates and gluten-free.
- Quinoa Flour – is a naturally gluten-free, plant-based protein, a source of fiber, iron and essential amino acids. Due to its consistency I usually need to mix this with another flour.
- Coconut Flour - this has less fat, fewer calories, vitamins and minerals than Almond Flour but also good if your dog needs to watch their weight. In some circumstances this flour can occassionally irritate allergies.
- Arrowroot Flour - is rich in iron, B vitamins, and potassium and can assist with digestive issues.
- Potato Flour or Potato Starch (lighter)– Potato flour is a natural source of iron, B vitamins, and fiber.
- Chia Seed Flour - packed with nutrients that are beneficial to dogs.
Pulse Flours
This is a great alternative to grain-free flours. These are made from pulses or legumes and also a gluten-free flour option
- Chickpea Flour - exceptionally high in fiber and protein
- Lentil Flour – a highly nutrient-dense pulse which is high in protein and fiber with a low glycemic index and low in calories.
Psuedo-grain Flour
Pseudograins or pseudocereals are non-grasses that resemble grains. They are actually seeds and not grains.
- Amaranth Flour - The flour is rich in vitamins, fiber and is gluten-free. Nutritious and packed with proteins but NOT suitable for dogs with diabetes.
- Lentil Flour – a highly nutrient-dense pulse and high in protein and fiber with a low glycemic index and low in calories.
Buckwheat Flour - is a pseudo-grain flour made from roasted buckwheat. This flour is a great source of dietary fiber, carbohydrates, and plant proteins. It also contains antioxidants.
Teff Flour - this is not a commom flour but can be used as a flour alternative. It has a nutty flavor which has more iron than barley and more calcium than oats. Rich in fiber and protein and can be easily mixed with other gluten-free flours. It is a great choice for dogs with sensitive stomachs as it is high in fiber and gluten-free. The only downside is the nutty earth flavour is not always a favourite with your dog.
Whole Wheat Grain Flours
Whole wheat grain flour is made from grains that are members of the grass family.
- Brown rice flour - is an excellent choice as grain flour for making dog treats fed in moderation.
- It is rich in fiber with a light texture similar to white flour but needs to be used in moderation, works well in treats and can affect those with allergies.
- Oat Flour - is good for dogs and is used as a substitute for many other flours. Oat Flour has protein, fiber and little calories making it a great choice for pups. Some dogs do have reactions to this flour.
- Sorghum Flour - is sometimes spoken about as an ancient grain flour and a good source of vitamins, minerals, plant-based proteins, and antioxidants. It makes exceptional treats due to its fine consistency and can be mixed with oter flours. It is a grain so if your dog has any sensitivities it may be best to be avoided.
- Whole-Grain Wheat Flour - popular flour for treats. Contains a lot of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. It is not grain-free or gluten-free
